Having established you will benefit from Financial Planning advice, you generally have three choices when it comes to sourcing advice and guidance from a professional, qualified Financial Planner.
You could seek advice from;
1. Industry Funds such as CBUS, First State, Rest, HostPlus etc
2. The banking system using CBA ANZ Westpac NAB etc.
3. Or a planner who is licenced through a Dealer Group whose name is not readily associated with a big 4 bank or large institutionally owned brand.
The first two are obvious choices. You may be a member of one of the first two choices Superannuation funds and feel comfortable knowing they will assist you (and recommend) using their product range. That makes sense. Afterall, you don’t go to a Toyota dealership expecting them to sell you a Holden!
The third choice can sometimes be a bit more complicated to get to the bottom of who owns and manages their licence. Who owns that Licence is an important question. The ownership and management of these licences may in turn influence the choice of solutions and products recommended by the Financial Planner with whom you are working with.
To save you some time, we have prepared the following list of dealer groups owned by large financial institutions and banks. This list has been prepared using data freely available on the internet (Click here to view the entire list). We have highlighted the licence which readily identifies itself as the brand. The others are less obviouse.

It is important to note the advice from institutionally owned dealer groups is not in doubt at all. The issue is one of helping the consumer understand who owns and controls the licence and to assist those consumers making a more informed decision about whom they choose to work with.
Where you do decide to engage a Financial Planning firm who is not owned (or potentially influenced) by a large financial institution, these suggestions may help you find someone local who may be better suited to your Financial Planning advice needs.
The AIOFP is a great place to start. The Association of Independently Owned Financial Professionals lists Financial Planners in your area that is not owned or influenced by large corporates.
“The AIOFP was originally formed in 1998 to differentiate the independently owned practices around the nation from the institutionally owned sector and give the independently owned practices a political and/or commercial voice in the market-place with ASIC and the Government”
Click here for more information on the AIOFP.
The Financial Planning Association is also a good source to find a professional Financial Planner but they do not distinguish between who individuals are licenced through like AIOFP does…
